Balcony or terrace glazing with tempered or laminated glass?

Glazing of balconies with tempered safety glass or laminated safety glass:

which one is the difference and what should I be careful about? Glass balcony constructions are becoming more and more popular.

When comparing offers, technical terms often appear that are not immediately understandable to the layman. Questions come up over and over again, especially with different types of glass.

For a better understanding, we would like to summarize the most important points regarding safety glazing below:

Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is safety glass that has undergone heat treatment. In other words, this glass achieves high resistance to shocks and impacts. However, if this glass is broken, it will break into small pieces and the risk of injury is not that great.

We know of broken car windows as an example of this. This glass is also known as safe because it offers greater theft protection for your balcony glazing or patio shoring.
Tempered glass can no longer be cut, drilled or ground due to heat treatment.

Laminated Glass

Laminated safety glass refers to two panes that have been "connected" with a film to form a glass.

In fact, these two panels are glued with the foil.
This type is mainly used for glass railings. The advantage is that if the panel is destroyed, no fragments fall off, but adhere to the film.

Tempered or Laminated - When and which safety glass should you choose for a balcony?

First of all, both types are safety glazing. The main differences are that there are different strengths and properties when glass is broken. Laminated safety glass, for example, can be used in all areas where a Tempered glass panel can go in areas where there is a risk of falling or where roof glazing cannot be used.

We recommend using appropriate laminated safety glass or Tempered glazing, especially for glass that protrudes below the parapet area.
